Wolves maintained the pace at the top of the Coca-Cola Championship with a 2-1 victory against 10-man Southampton at St Mary's.

The midlands outfit's first win over the Saints since April 1980 came courtesy of first-half goals from Chris Iwelumo and David Jones as Mick McCarthy's troops maintained their six-point lead over Birmingham at the summit.

Jan Poortvliet's young Southampton side pulled a goal back through Alex Pearce but the home team were never really in the match after the experienced Jason Euell was dismissed for a studs-up challenge on Richard Stearman just before half-time.

Ten-man Birmingham maintained the gap to the leaders after coming from behind to beat Charlton 3-2 in a thriller at St Andrews.

James McFadden opened the scoring for Alex McLeish's side with a fine curling shot but Hameur Bouazza equalised with a volley.

Andy Gray gave the London side the lead just before the half-hour mark but the visitors pressed self-destruct after the break, and a pair of errors by goalkeeper Nicky Weaver saw Kevin Phillips level after 50 minutes before Franck Queudrue lashed home the winner five minutes later. Nigel Quashie was sent off for the hosts for a second yellow card after 59 minutes.

Reading stay third after a workmanlike 2-0 win at Sheffield United, while Burnley secured a second victory in west London in the space of three days with a 2-1 win against QPR at Loftus Road.

Meanwhile, Swansea beat Norwich 3-2, Derby claimed a resounding 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday and Michael McIndoe saw his injury-time penalty saved by Lee Camp as Bristol City and Nottingham Forest played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Ashton Gate.

Elsewhere, Cardiff grabbed a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, while Barnsley defender Stephen Foster celebrated being named club captain by firing the winner as his side beat Watford 2-1.
