Arsenal were left kicking themselves after they succumbed to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Everton on Tuesday.
Alexis Sanchez’s early free-kick set the Gunners on their way to a seemingly routine win but Everton, who had lost four of their previous seven games, refused to sit back and accept defeat.
And Ronald Koeman’s side was rewarded for its efforts, Seamus Coleman equalising before half-time and Ashley Williams grabbing a late winner.
It’s not a terrible defeat for Arsenal - they remain second in the table, three points behind Chelsea - but Arsene Wenger will have expected his in-form side to return from Merseyside with three points.
Especially when they took the lead. Sanchez’s first-half goal compounded a miserable two-minute period for Everton, and Williams in particular.
First, the Welshman clattered into his own teammate Idrissa Gueye. Then Sanchez’s free-kick cannoned off Williams and beyond a helpless Maarten Stekelenburg.
The former Swansea man made up for his blunders with a fine header from Ross Barkley’s corner in the 86th minute.
It was the second goal Arsenal conceded from a cross and an inquest is definitely required.
Robbie Savage summed it up best after Coleman was allowed to creep into the box to score.
Seeing Williams score a header was less of a surprise. However, Arsenal certainly could have defended the corner better and Mesut Ozil’s actions at the set piece have infuriated Gunners’ fans.
Watch the German’s inexcusable attempt to stop Williams below.
Ozil is paid to create goals instead of defending them but that’s a petty excuse. Not only did he fail to track Williams but he didn’t even attempt to get close to the ball.
Arsenal fans blast Ozil
Needless to say, Arsenal fans have vented their fury at the mercurial playmaker’s efforts.
