Watford have confirmed chief executive Mark Ashton has followed chairman Graham Simpson in resigning from the Coca-Cola Championship club's board.

Simpson surprisingly stepped down from his role at an Extraordinary General Meeting last Monday leaving just Ashton and interim chairman Andrew Wilson as the only directors at Vicarage Road.

But Ashton has now also stepped down to be replaced by Julian Winter - a former professional football player who has been involved with the club for two and a half years as community director and deputy CEO.

Winter said: "I'm proud to be taking over here at Vicarage Road.

"We've got some challenging times ahead, but we have a strong team in the background and a clear focus on what we need to achieve.

"I've spoken at length with the interim chairman Andy Wilson and we both understand fully the way forward for a club of this size."
