Andy Carroll headed his first Barclays Premier League goal to save Newcastle from a third consecutive defeat after an entertaining 2-2 draw with West Ham at St James' Park.

The Hammers hit back strongly after Michael Owen's 19th-minute opener with goals from Craig Bellamy and Carlton Cole heaping more pressure upon the struggling Magpies.

But Carroll rose highest to head home from Damien Duff's deep cross in the 78th minute and bring relief all round for the long-suffering home fans.
