Steve Coppell has insisted Reading were never in danger of losing their best players in January.

Stephen Hunt was constantly linked with a move back to the Premier League but manager Coppell has confirmed the club did not field a bid at any stage for the winger.

He said: "We were never under any threat, despite what all the speculation might have suggested."

He added: "I can honestly say we never received a formal offer for one of our players at any stage during the window.

"If you leave the door open just a little bit the press assume business will be done so that is why we signed Kevin Doyle to a new contract well before the window opened."
