Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson has been named Barclays manager of the month for January.

Nemanja Vidic was named the player of the month.

United picked up maximum points without conceding a goal throughout the month to move into a strong position to defend their title.

The performances of Serbia defender Vidic went some way to maintaining United's record run of consecutive clean sheets, which they have since extended to 12.

Vidic also scored goals against Chelsea and West Brom in January.

Ferguson has now won the manager of the month award on 22 occasions.

The Scot said: "It is always nice to be recognised. That has to do with the performance of the team. That is what creates it.

"We will happily accept them, we just hope we get them in May. That is the best time to get them."
