Charlton boss Phil Parkinson has revealed he made an enquiry about Watford defender Jay DeMerit before the transfer deadline.

Injuries to Mark Hudson and Jonathan Fortune left the Addicks desperately short at the back, with midfielder Matt Holland forced to play as a makeshift centre-half.

"In the week we lost Hudson and Fortune, we tried to get two centre-backs in," said Parkinson.

"I felt we'd gone for most of the season with two, using Matty as cover, which obviously isn't his natural position.

"We only got one in but Jay DeMerit was a player we were looking at, along with several others. We put a call in about DeMerit to see what the situation was, but that was one of several calls we made."
