About Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid is one of the biggest clubs in world football and have achieved enormous amounts of success in their long, illustrious history. Founded in 1903, the club is commonly known as ‘Atletico’ and occupies rivalries with both Barcelona and Real Madrid to compete for the La Liga title each season. Throughout the years, competing with these two Spanish giants has been a tough task, but Atletico have often broken the barrier and showcased their ability to challenge their rivals.
Atletico’s rivalry with Barcelona has only recently emerged; the transfer of Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona and Luis Suarez to Atletico has created tension between the two clubs. However, the club’s main rival is Real Madrid and the pair have often clashed over the years in heated battles with goals, red cards and plentiful controversy along the way.
Overall, Atletico have won the La Liga 10 times in the club’s history, the most recent triumph dating back to the 2013/14 campaign. Dethroning either Barcelona or Real Madrid from the top of the table is something of a rarity and the Atletico fans will be hoping to see more titles in the future. Elsewhere, the club has won the Copa del Rey 10 times and the Supercopa de Espana twice.
In terms of European success, Atletico are yet to win the prized Champions League. They have finished runners-up of the competition on three occasions, the most recent being the 2016 final against Real Madrid. Apart from that, the club does have success in the Europa League, winning the competition three times. Atletico are also three-time winners of the UEFA Super Cup and won the European Cup Winners’ Cup once back in 1962.
