WATCH: Masai Ujiri and Giants of Africa launches the first ever GOA Festival 2020

The Giants of Africa Festival will bring together boys and girls from 11 African countries to highlight and celebrate each country’s unique culture and traditions. Two hundred youth from Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon, Mali, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and Somalia will participate in the week-long festivities. The event will run from Aug. 16 to 22, and will also feature special events and concerts open to the public.

he Basketball Africa League (BAL), a new professional league featuring 12 club teams from across Africa and scheduled to begin to play in March 2020. WATCH: Giants Of Africa takes Women's Basketball to Somalia

Giants of Africa partnered with Elman Peace Centre to run a day clinic in Mogadishu, Somalia. Elman Peace Centre is a non-profit organization that rehabilitates survivors of gender-based sexual violence and child soldiers. The centre incorporates art and sports for development. Scars of sexual abuse and violence rob children of their chance to fulfil their potential and sports restore it. The day clinic consisted of 50 girls enrolled in the Elman Peace Basketball Club. Each girl received a full Nike kit that included sneakers, jerseys and shorts. For the day, GOA coaches put the girls through various basketball stations where they learned the fundamentals of basketball. The energy was top notch. On this beautiful sunny day, resilience and joyful does not begin to describe the girls from the Elman Peace Centre.

WATCH: Women's sport with Giants Of Africa in South Sudan 2019

It wasn’t long to feel welcomed in Juba, South Sudan. As soon as the Giants of Africa crew stepped off the plane, they were greeted by members of the South Sudan Basketball Federation as well as staff from the Luol Deng Foundation, including Luol’s brother, Deng Deng. GOA’s own Sarah Chan, who was born and raised in Juba, was monumental in partnering Giants of Africa with the Luol Deng Foundation. Together, at Juba University, on a double court named after the late Manute Bol, the two foundations began their collective initiative – to provide a few days of high-level instruction (and fun) for 53 deserving, talented kids.

WATCH: Giants Of Africa Tanzania Moments for Women's sport

Another hot August day in Africa, and another Giants of Africa first – this time the team landed in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to continue the mission of youth empowerment through basketball. The most populous city in the country is banked by the Indian Ocean and serves as the hotbed for the arts, especially fashion, media, music, and film and television. The International School of Tanganyika (IST) was the backdrop for girls and boys combined camp, creating a spirited, educational, and dynamic experience for the kids. From the opening drill to the final cheer, it was evident that Tanzania wanted to let the Giants of Africa team know: they want basketball, and they’re willing to work for it. After a hyper-competitive two days, it was the girls that stole the show, electrifying the crowd with their All-Star game performance.
