Billy Joe Saunders
Billy Joe Saunders Profile
Billy Joe Saunders is a professional boxer who competes in the Super-middleweight category – one of the few boxers at elite level who still possesses a perfect record.
Born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire on 30th August 1989, the 31-year-old started out in his local gym and competed for Cheshunt Amateur boxing club, following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather Absolom Beeney who was a famous bare-knuckle boxer. Saunders won all of his first 49 amateur bouts but ultimately came up short at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 in the second round to Carlos Banteux. In December of that year, Saunders became a professional boxer.
He started off in the Middleweight division and took on Attila Molnar in 2009 and secured a second-round stoppage in what was an impressive performance. This would be the start of a 15-fight winning streak before beating well-respected domestic fighter Nick Blackwell for the British title in 2012, going on to make a successful defence before picking up the WBO international Middleweight belt.
Saunders became a world champion in December 2015, beating Andy Lee via majority decision in Manchester, England to win the WBO title. He would make three defences of his crown before making the decision to move up to Super-middleweight in 2018.
After 18 months, he defeated Shefat Isufi become a world champion in two different weight categories and still holds the belt to this day. Currently, he is training for his unification title fight against the great Canelo Alvarez on 8th May 2021 – easily the biggest fight of his career and could go down as one of the greatest British boxers in history if he were to claim victory.
Away from the ring, Saunders is part of a Romanichal travelling community and is a close friend of Heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury.
