Hafthor Bjornsson

Hafthor Bjornsson Profile

Hafthor Julius Bjornsson is a professional strongman and actor and is the first person in history to win the Arnold Strongman Classic, Europe’s Strongest Man and World’s Strongest Man (WSM) in the same year.

Born in Reykjavik, Iceland on 26th November 1988, Bjornsson was a former basketball player, representing Icelandic Division I side Breidablik before moving to FSu in 2005. However, his career on the court would be cut short after suffering a reoccurring ankle injury in 2008 that would permanently sideline him from the sport.

This subsequently led him to pursue a strongman career that turned out to be remarkably successful for Bjornsson, after winning the Strongest Man event in Iceland for two years in a row in 2010 and 2011, which led to him winning the competition in Europe on five different occasions.

After finishing runner-up to both American strongman Brian Shaw and long-running rival Eddie Hall, Bjornsson finally won the WSM in 2018 on his eighth attempt. Nicknamed ‘Thor' and 'The Mountain,' he also claimed first place in the prestigious Arnold Strongman Classic in 2018, 2019 and 2020. He also possesses the world record for the heaviest deadlift of 501 kg, which surpassed Hall’s record of 500 kg set in 2016.

Away from the gym and the stage, Bjornsson is married to his wife Henson and have a child together living just outside Reykjavik, and also starred in the hugely popular HBO series Game of Thrones.
