Chelsea ‘have to consider’ reappointing AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho following their struggles this season, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Blues have already dismissed Thomas Tuchel in 2022/23 but have arguably regressed even further under Graham Potter, sparking speculation over his immediate future.

Chelsea manager news – Jose Mourinho

According to the Daily Mail, Mourinho is ‘eager to return’ to English football next season amid frustration over a lack of financial backing at Roma.

It’s believed that the 60-year-old’s family still live in London and that his preference has always been to manage in the Premier League than elsewhere.

Reliable source Simon Phillips previously informed GMS that the talk suggesting Mourinho wanting to return for a third spell at Chelsea is ‘100% true’.

"He said 'I want to come back to the club, if you're thinking about a new manager, I want to come back for a third spell', so Mourinho is keen to come back to Chelsea that's 100% true," revealed Phillips.

Since then, 90min has reported that Mauricio Pochettino has turned down Chelsea, indicating the capital club’s hierarchy are looking to move on from Potter.

What has Jones said about Mourinho?

Jones has disclosed that he believes Chelsea’s current squad ‘needs to be managed’ by someone with a large amount of experience and someone who has a bit of an ego.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “So, I think a squad like this needs to be managed by someone with big experience, but also someone who's got some ego.

“I think you have to be looking at and considering people from the very top of the trade here like Luis Enrique, Jose Mourinho. I know it sounds stupid, but yes, you have to consider him.”

How is Mourinho getting on at Roma?

Mourinho has been in charge of Roma for 18 months now and has revived his managerial career following disappointing spells at both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The two-time Champions League-winning boss has claimed 46 victories and 18 draws from his 87 games at the helm of the Italian giants, averaging 1.79 points per game.

Mourinho also guided Roma to their first European trophy last season as they claimed the UEFA Europa Conference League and has them challenging for a top-four spot in Serie A this time around.

Going back to Mourinho may be an unpopular choice among large sections of the Chelsea fan base, though, due to his pragmatic playing style and underwhelming stints at United and Spurs.
