Leeds United's search for a new manager could lead them towards Steven Gerrard, journalist Dean Jones has revealed to GIVEMESPORT.

The Yorkshire-based outfit have been looking for a new boss since sacking Jesse Marsch last week, with Jones suggesting Gerrard could be next on their list of targets.

Leeds United manager news - Steven Gerrard

According to The Daily Mirror, the Leeds hierarchy are contemplating a move that would see Gerrard return to Premier League management.

It's claimed Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani and director of football Victor Orta are considering turning to Gerrard following a number of rejections they've faced elsewhere.

Journalist Jones told GMS last week that Leeds were convinced they could lure Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola, only for the Spanish coach to turn them down after negotiations.

Elsewhere, the Daily Mirror report reads, Carlos Corberan had also been on Leeds' list, but the West Bromwich Albion boss went on to sign a contract extension with the Championship club instead.

That's left Leeds scrambling around the bargain bucket somewhat searching for alternatives, with ex-Aston Villa and Rangers boss Gerrard a serious candidate to replace Marsch.

What has Dean Jones said about Gerrard to Leeds?

Speaking in an interview with GMS, Jones has now said that Gerrard himself should be considering taking the Leeds job, should it become available.

However, Jones has shared reservations that Gerrard might not be the most suitable man for the job, with suggestions the supporters could be against the appointment.

On the 42-year-old, Jones said: "I think he'd be open to hearing about it and I'd be surprised if he wasn't.

"But he'd have to be cautious about how much he genuinely believes he could turn things around.

"Because the support isn’t going to be automatically behind Steven Gerrard.

"There are going to be some supporters that wouldn't want him leading their club.”

Is Gerrard a worthwhile appointment for Leeds?

It's safe to say Gerrard's spell as Aston Villa manager limped towards an unceremonious ending.

Appointed in November 2021, the Liverpool midfielder that captained the Reds to Champions League glory in 2005 was sacked by the West Midlands outfit just 11 months later.

Gerrard left Villa Park having won just 13 of his 40 matches in charge across all competitions, indicating the Villans were correct to pull the plug (Soccerbase).

With Leeds fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table, it's difficult to see Gerrard, who has no prior experience of saving clubs from relegation scraps, being an appropriate appointment for the Premier League strugglers.

Instead, should Leeds wish to maintain their top-flight status for another season at least, they'd be best off exploring alternative options, should any become available.
