Newcastle United look at both Manchester United ace Scott McTominay and Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek as 'serious targets' at St James's Park this summer, transfer insider Dean Jones has informed GIVEMESPORT.

The duo were heavily linked with a move to the North East in January; however, remain members of their respective sides and will continue to aid their endeavours until the end of the season at least.

Newcastle United latest transfer news - McTominay and Loftus Cheek

Last month, The Athletic reported that Newcastle were said to have 'held talks' over a swoop to bring McTominay to St James's Park in January from Manchester United, though were rebuffed in their attempts to do so.

There is scope for a move to be looked at again in the summer; nevertheless, no such deal was to materialise due to Erik ten Hag's reluctance to lose any more bodies due to the financial restrictions the Red Devils' have been under to bring in players in January.

Capology understands that McTominay earns £60,000 per week at Old Trafford and has a contract at his boyhood club until 2025.

In the case of Loftus-Cheek, The Telegraph claimed in January that the Magpies were keen to bring in the midfielder to strengthen their hopes of a top-four finish. The £120k-a-week ace was prioritised due to having a peripheral role under Chelsea boss Graham Potter, but no interest was firmed up for his services and he is still on the books at Stamford Bridge for now.

What has Dean Jones said about McTominay and Loftus-Cheek?

Journalist Jones believes that both McTominay and Loftus-Cheek will be highly sought after at St James's Park in the summer.

Jones told GMS: "I know people like to imagine that there will be fancy names coming into Newcastle, but it's just not the way they've been doing things. They want players that fit roles and there'll be talk about Ruben Neves and Caicedo and they'll definitely like those players. There also players like Loftus-Cheek, Scott McTominay, that are actually going to be serious targets at the end of this season."

Should Newcastle United be targeting McTominay and Loftus-Cheek?

Given their financial power, many will be expecting Newcastle to try and sign the cream of the crop and pay significant sums of money to try and attract footballing powerhouses to St James's Park.

Eddie Howe looks to have taken a different path, with many of his signings being tried and trusted players with Premier League experience, which is a category both McTominay and Loftus-Cheek both fall into.

Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Nick Pope, Matt Targett and Anthony Gordon are just some examples of the type of addition the Magpies boss tends to make, with every one of them except January arrival Gordon going on to play a major part in their success.

Moving forward, it may be wise to stick to a transfer strategy that has already borne fruit in the North East as Newcastle aim to challenge the elite for silverware in English football regularly.
