Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Mason Mount's situation and will set their sights on luring the Chelsea star to St James' Park if he 'becomes available', transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Magpies were not afraid to spend big last month, with Anthony Gordon arriving in a £45million deal from Everton, but head coach Eddie Howe will be handed another opportunity to bolster his squad in the summer.

Newcastle transfer news - Mason Mount

According to 90min, Newcastle are among a host of clubs monitoring Mount's situation after stalling on signing a new contract at Chelsea.

The report suggests Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United are additional suitors of the England international amid growing uncertainty over his future.

Mount is refusing to put pen-to-paper at Stamford Bridge as he is seeking a significant increase on his existing wage, while he is also reluctant to commit to a long-term deal which has become commonplace since Todd Boehly led a £4.25billion takeover of Chelsea.

The midfielder entered the final 18 months of his £80,000-per-week contract at the turn of the year, so the west Londoners have been desperate to agree fresh terms.

Respected journalist Simon Phillips recently told GiveMeSport that Chelsea co-owner Boehly is leading the discussions with Mount over a new deal.

What has Dean Jones said about Mount?

Jones understands that Newcastle are watching Mount's situation closely despite having little confidence in Chelsea being open to sanctioning his departure in the coming months.

The transfer insider is aware the Magpies are keen to win the race for the 24-year-old if he is put up for sale this summer.

Jones told GiveMeSport: "At the moment, I'm told it's really just a watching brief because they're not genuinely expecting Mason Mount to become available on the market.

"I think it would be a big surprise if he genuinely was for sale. But if he is, then Newcastle absolutely want to be in that conversation."

Would Mount be a good signing for Newcastle?

Newcastle have set their sights on qualifying for the Champions League and that is a competition where Mount has plenty of experience, with Transfermarkt statistics showing he has racked up 11 goal contributions in 33 appearances.

That highlights the Portsmouth-born star could be invaluable to Howe's charges as they look to adjust to the rigours of Europe's elite club competition.

Mount also headed into the weekend having been handed an average match rating of 6.79 by WhoScored, a figure which has only been bettered by three Chelsea teammates in Premier League action this season.

Although the Blues' academy graduate has not found the back of the net since December and only got his name on the scoresheet three times since the campaign got underway, there is no doubt that he would be a shrewd investment by Newcastle.

Having been dubbed a 'terrific talent' by Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy, via Metro, the Magpies should do all they can to land Mount if it becomes clear his days at Stamford Bridge are numbered.
