Serena Williams has established herself as one of the most established, yet successful female athletes within the history of sport. 

Within the Open Era, Williams is the most decorated tennis player amongst male and females. 

The 38-year-old American was born in Saginaw, Michigan, and started her professional career in October 1995. 

Although Williams is now at the tail end of her career, the 38-year-old dominated the world of tennis, as she achieved incredible success in all four Grand Slams in all corners of the globe. Williams first reached number one on July 8, 2002 - seven years after she turned pro. 

After being replaced as number one on a few occasions, throughout Williams’ career, she has spent a total of 319 weeks on top of the female tennis pile. Furthermore, Williams achieved incredible financial success off the court due to her performances, as she was the only woman who featured in the Forbes’ highest-paid athletes list in 2017 - generating an income of $27m.
